Adopted by the US Armed Forces in 1942, the M1 and subsequent M1A1 SMGs were improved versions of the decades old M1928 series SMG. Removing the ability to feed from a drum magazine, simplified receiver patterns, a non-finned barrel, no compensator, and simplified bolt, reduced both the production cost, and fire rate of the SMG to fit the needs of a wartime economy. Troops loved the gun which they had spent years familar with in gangster flicks at the theatre, and admired its stopping power in combat. Fielded by servicemen around the globe in WWII, Korea, and even Vietnam, the M1A1 has continued to live on in the hearts and minds of gun enthusiasts everywhere as the quintessential American SMG.
