WWII US Army Crewman - Reversed Jacket - Normandy 1944
Passing the 81st anniversary D-Day commemorations this year, I've had a lot of requests to revisit the series of D-Day inspired minifigures I've created over the years. With most of these past figures being based more so on popular culture and film, or just broader generalizations for MOC building, I wanted to take a departure and explore some variations like I've done so far with my collection of WWII US Marines. Rather than depicting the khaki clad, assault vest wearing, amphibious waves one pictures, this collection will explore the unique variations of uniforms and equipment issued out to specific units in Normandy and the modifications made as they fought through the summer.
This figure is based on the common practice of GIs serving in Europe, without access to camouflage uniforms, reversing the M1941 field jackets so the wool lining was on the outside. This was largely due to the hot Normandy sun quickly fading the OD field jackets to a bright tan color. Several veterans accounts complain at length of this issue, especially upon encountering the camouflaged uniforms issued to their neighboring units, or even the camouflaged smocks found on dead or captured Germans. The most expedient solution was to flip the jacket inside-out, so the bright tan shell would face inwards, leaving the better camouflaged brown wool lining facing outwards. Beyond the uniform, I've included a gear loadout on this figure to depict an officer, NCO, or gun crew member equipped with an M1 Carbine. He features the army M1936 pistol belt with M1 carbine magazine pouch, canteen, compass pouch, and musette bag with suspenders. I've also included a mix of both yellow and OD hand grenades on the belt, as the existing stocks of yellow grenades continued to be used in the field even as new OD ones began to arrive. This figure comes complete with a wrap around printed BrickArms M1 helmet, featuring artwork for the scrim issued to most forces fighting in Normandy.
