Passing the 81st anniversary D-Day commemorations this year, I've had a lot of requests to revisit the series of D-Day inspired minifigures I've created over the years. With most of these past figures being based more so on popular culture and film, or just broader generalizations for MOC building, I wanted to take a departure and explore some variations like I've done so far with my collection of WWII US Marines. Rather than depicting the khaki clad, assault vest wearing, amphibious waves one pictures, this collection will explore the unique variations of uniforms and equipment issued out to specific units in Normandy and the modifications made as they fought through the summer.

This figure is based on the common practice of GIs serving in Europe, without access to camouflage uniforms, hand painting camo patterns on their M1941 field jackets. While this practice extended across several divisions, I've chosen the 30th ID in this instance, which are often seen painting their jackets during the fighting for St. Lo. I've included my own art traced off of an original hand painted jacket for this figure, on top of new art for the standard M41 field jacket over the M37 wool uniform. I've based the loadout off of several reference images from fighting in Normandy. He comes equipped with the standard army M1923 cartridge belt with canteen, and M1943 shovel just beginning to be issued in Normandy. I've also included the lightweight gas mask bag, issued to invasion troops for fear of gas attack, although often discarded in the field, as well as new art for the M1 GP bag slung across his shoulder, used to carry additional ammo and explosives on the move. Completing the figure is a new print on the back of the BrickArms M1 helmet depicting the chinstraps buckled behind it, a common practice in the army to keep them out of the way.
