$32.00 - $200.00

To accompany my previous release of the early WWII Navy Corpsman, I wanted to offer a later war example with my continuing Iwo Jima anniversary collection. This figure is largely based off Navy Pharmacist's Mate Second Class John Bradley, well known for his inspiration of the book and subsequent movie, Flags of our Fathers. Originally thought to have been pictured in the ubiquitous second flag raising photo, decades of research would ultimately prove he was not pictured, but had indeed raised the first, lesser known flag. Most interestingly to me, Marine combat photographer Lou Lowery, who photographed the first flag raising, took numerous photos of Bradley while accompanying the patrol up Mount Suribachi.

Based off these photos, I've recreated the minifigure with all of the appropriate uniform items and equipment. Similar to most Marines a few days into combat on Iwo Jima, Bradley has tucked his leggings up underneath his cuffed trousers, and donned his M41 field jacket over a wool shirt. His equipment loadout is much more standard for navy corpsmen late in WWII compared to my previous figure. The hospital personnel bag has been replaced by the newer 14-1450 corpsman's bags, similar to the US Army medics bags. He did however, ditch the support suspender system for them, and has instead used straps to just sling the bags over each shoulder. Rounding out his equipment, he has a straight forward Marine canteen, Jungle first aid kit with army pouch attached underneath, and a Ka-Bar knife on the back of his belt. Interestingly, I could not find any photo proof of him carrying a sidearm. While most corpsmen did scavenge sidearms and even rifles for protection on the frontline, some did adhere to the Geneva Convention, even in the Pacific Theatre.
