As we approach the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, I'm focusing on the first portrayal I'm aware of in custom Lego of Marines as they appeared during this pivotal engagement. As the war in the Pacific came to a conclusion, with the old breed of Marines and disbanded Raider and Paramarine battlaions mixing in with new units of draftees, huge variances in equipment increased. Further amplified by the desolate landscape, and relatively colder temperatures on Iwo Jima, just about every variety of equipment and uniform from WWII make an appearence.

To round out my series focusing on the second flag raising, I've finally completed my figure depicting Joe Rosenthal to accompany my previous Bill Genaust release. Although a civilian photograher with the Associated Press, Rosenthal was embedded with Marine and Army units throughout the Pacific War, taking some of WWII's most well known images. His crowning achievement would prove to be "Raising the Flag On Iwo Jima" considered to be one of the most recognizeable images in US and world military history.

I've created this figure from the ground up based on his actual appearence during the Battle of Iwo Jima. Embedded with the Marines, he wore the standard N1 boondocker boots, and can be seen wearing the Marine issue dungaree trousers and wool undershirt. However, with access to supply lines across the Pacific, he's gotten ahold of an army M1943 field jacket that would not see major use by the Marines until landing on Okinawa. As this is a longer jacket, I've printed the bottom with some slight color matching onto the minifigure hips. Color theory on super saturated ABS parts like Lego does not always work out perfectly though, so please expect some slight difference in hue as shown in the photos. I've completed the figure with his camera satchel slung under his arm, as well as his awesome clear acrylic 1940s eyeglasses, which have gotten a light gloss and texture print treatment. Each figure also comes complete with my rendition of his Speed Graphic still camera, with texture printed lens.
