With many of my most requested previous minifigures being based on the battle of Guadalcanal, I've been planning on circling back and examining it again with my current approach of 1:1 representations of real people. This particular minifigure is based off the widely known photo the 1st Marines shortly after landing on Guadalcanal. Famously, Sidney Phillips of 'The Pacific' fame, can be seen relieving himself in the top right corner.
Although usually attributed to the 7th and 8th Marines having not yet received the new dungaree uniforms, the khaki service uniform can also be seen worn across just about every Marine regiment on Guadalcanal. As their dungaree uniforms wore out, and replenishment for anything but food and ammunition of little importance to the Navy under threat of attack on any supply convoy, cycling useable uniforms became a daily task.
This figure depicts the unique and often forgotten role of the rifle grenadier in WWII US rifle squads. In the Marine Corps, this included the bizarre provision of a grenade vest, based on an army piece of WWI vintage, to carry their french VB rifle grenades, also of WWI vintage. Completing his loadout is the Marine field pack in light marching order configuration to match the picture, with the M1905 16 inch bayonet for the M1903 Springfield rifle still being issued at this time. I've also included a texture printed BrickArms M1 helmet, showcasing the field modification of adding the Marine Corps EGA to the front of the bare helmet, as the camouflage covers had not yet been introduced.
